Migration of On-Premises Workloads to AWS for Insurance Products, Marketing and Distribution Organization

Client Overview

The client is a distributor of insurance products with expertise in Fixed Index Annuities, Fixed Annuities, and Life and Long-Term Care Insurance. They are referred as a Field Marketing Organization (FMO) or Independent Marketing Organization (IMO) in the industry. Insurance carriers utilize FMOs to promote and distribute their products and services.

They offer a comprehensive range of specialized solutions spanning commercial, life, health, employee benefits, and more to equip agents for growth. They provide ongoing training, marketing funds, sales automation tools, and dedicated support to equip producers for efficient operations while delivering highly consultative client experiences.

The client had their applications configured in physical and virtual environments, hosted in an on-premise setup in the US West region. The setup was predominantly characterized by Windows OS supporting critical business applications and MySQL database hosting essential business data. As the company’s business grew, the client planned to migrate the environment to the cloud, transform the infrastructure, and modernize the technology and application stack.

Business Challenge

  • The customer’s on-premises infrastructure was suffering from significant performance degradation. Critical business applications were running slower, impacting overall operational efficiency.

  • The infrastructure was less flexible, making it difficult to adapt to changing business needs. Scaling up infrastructure resources in response to demand fluctuations was time-consuming and costly. This inflexibility was restricting the customer from seizing new opportunities quickly.

  • Maintaining the on-premise infrastructure was getting expensive as the hardware refresh cycles, software licensing, and operational costs were straining the IT Budget.

  • The client wanted to expedite the cloud migration journey in order to leverage cloud capabilities to transform the infrastructure and build a future state model supporting the planned business expansion.

Solution Approach

  • The Concierto platform team engaged with the client’s technical team to architect new AWS infrastructure and formulated a strategic plan for migrating workloads from on-premises to the AWS environment.

  • The client was onboarded on the Concierto platform, which conducted an automated landscape discovery and assessment. Leveraging the platform, a thorough migration readiness assessment of the existing environment was conducted, and gaps such as requisite operating system upgrades were identified.

  • The assessment provided a comprehensive report, including cloud-end transition design, transition planning with DevOps, security and operation posture, and TCO analysis.

  • Utilizing the assessment data, AI-driven techniques were employed to create move groups based on identified application dependencies. This led to the meticulous planning of the migration waves, based on the move groups and application criticality, to ensure a seamless transition.

  • Concierto configured the AWS landing zone and performed lift and shift migration of identified workloads. Concierto orchestrated the entire migration process, which included ~ 25TB of data with various Windows-based applications, files, and MySQL database servers. The migration, including the final cutover, was completed in 5 weeks, followed by 2 weeks of hypercare support.

  • After successful migration, implemented AWS cloud infrastructure management (ITSM, patching, monitoring, and proactive issue resolution), spanning L1 to L3 support. The platform effectively optimized the overall operations by leveraging Concierto MANAGE's built-in automation capabilities.

Business Benefits

The customer was able to realize the following benefits:

  • The enhanced design, incorporating a high availability architecture and streamlined backup and recovery process, enabled the client to achieve increased uptime and better performance along with scalable and flexible infrastructure, which can seamlessly accommodate future growth and changing business needs.

  • The Concierto platform sped up the transition process and migrated their application and data to the AWS platform faster, giving them the flexibility to focus on other infrastructure transformation objectives.

  • The Concierto platform ensured that relevant security and compliance requirements were met during the migration.

  • With a single license of the Concierto platform, the customer achieved a ~50% cost reduction by replacing existing software licenses for ITSM, patching, and monitoring. Reduced infrastructure hosting cost by ~30%.

  • With Concierto migrating the workloads to AWS and managing the steady state operations, the customer could streamline its IT operations, freeing up internal resources to focus on core business objectives.
